The Power of Perseverance: Beyond Passion in Dressage

Writer: Deirdre R. SaboDeirdre R. Sabo

As dressage riders, we often find ourselves captivated by the beauty of our art—gliding through movements, the elegance of our horses, and the thrill of competition. Passion is the driving force that ignites our journey, prompting us to wake up at dawn for training sessions and pushing us to perfect that challenging pirouette. It’s vital and invigorating, but let's face it: passion isn’t a constant. It ebbs and flows, and there are days when it seems almost non-existent.

The truth is that those we admire as successful riders have faced moments of doubt and lack of motivation throughout their journeys. They’ve been where you are, experiencing days when their enthusiasm waned and the thought of riding felt like a chore. What sets them apart is their passion and

ability to keep pushing through—even when their heart isn’t in it.

So, what fuels us when passion takes a back seat? Here are a few motivators to consider when you find yourself struggling:

1. You Have Already Come This Far

Reflect on your journey. All the hours you've spent in the saddle, the lessons learned, and the obstacles overcome—it all counts. When motivation dips, reminding yourself of how far you've come can reignite your commitment. Every small victory deserves recognition, and sometimes, taking a step back to see the bigger picture can provide the push you need to keep going.

2. People Are Relying on You

As riders, we are part of a larger community. Whether it’s your coach, fellow riders, or your horse, each relationship hinges on commitment and trust. Knowing that others depend on your dedication can be a powerful motivator. You are part of a team, and your actions not only impact your success but also that of those around you.

3. You Have to Pay the Bills

Let’s get real—horses and training are not cheap. The financial investment can serve as a solid grounding factor. When faced with a lack of motivation, think about the time and resources you’ve already committed. It’s powerful to recognize that continuing to push through, even on tough days, is a way of honoring that investment.

4. Love for the Horse

Our horses are more than just partners; they are our companions and friends. That bond can be a deep well of motivation. When passion wanes, shift your focus to your love for your horse. Their well-being and happiness should be a priority, and they depend on you to show up and work with them, regardless of your mood.

5. Love for Your Clients

If you’re a trainer, remember the impact you have on your clients. Their growth and achievements are often a reflection of your guidance and hard work. Staying dedicated even when passion feels lacking can inspire them and strengthen your relationships. Your commitment to their journey can rekindle your own spark.

6. Deep Down, You Know This Is What You Are Supposed to Do

Every career has its ups and downs, and riding is no exception. On tough days, it can feel pointless, but deep down, many of us recognize that this is our calling. Reflect on the reasons you fell in love with dressage in the first place. That intrinsic knowing can carry you through the most challenging moments.

In the world of dressage, the path will never be a straight line. Embracing the ups and downs with resilience is what truly distinguishes successful riders. While passion may get you started, it’s the dedication to your work, the relationships you build, and the understanding of your purpose that will ultimately carry you through. So the next time you find yourself struggling, remember these motivations and keep pushing forward, one ride at a time. Your journey is worth it!
