Finding Balance: The Joy of Working with Young Horses

 I had a call with a new client that really reignited my passion for what I do. She has a young Thoroughbred who she’s interested in jumping but mentioned that he’s a bit out of balance and needs consistent work. From the moment she started talking about him, I could feel that familiar excitement bubbling up inside me.

It’s funny—while he is not the horse destined for the international dressage ring, what really lights me up is the opportunity to take a horse that’s a bit wobbly and help mold them into a confident, happy athlete. This young horse isn’t just a project; he represents a blank canvas, a chance to dive into the world of dressage and truly make a difference in his performance and overall well-being.  Helping horses like this is what builds my skill set for creating international horses.

I find that it’s these young, unbalanced horses that teach me the most about training and patience. Each one presents a unique set of challenges, but every tiny victory feels like a step toward something greater. When I think about how dressage principles can help this horse find his balance and rhythm, I can’t help but grin! It’s not just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about fostering a true partnership between horse and rider.

As I listened to her describe his quirks and personality, I felt a spark of connection. I can already envision the moments we’ll spend working on his balance, fine-tuning his movements, and building his confidence. These experiences remind me of why I love this sport. While the international competitions are the cherry on top, it’s the everyday work with these young horses that lays the foundation for greatness.

I’m practically crawling out of my skin to get started with him! Dressage never gets old; it evolves and deepens with every horse I work with. I can’t wait to see what this journey holds, and I’m so grateful to be part of this horse’s story. Here’s to many joyful rides and the incredible transformations that lie ahead! 🐴✨
